Tripura to Get Its Own Tea Auction Centre, Boosting Northeast’s Tea Economy
Tripura is set to establish its first Tea Auction Centre, marking a significant milestone for the state’s growing tea industry. Once operational, Tripura will become the second state in Northeast India after Assam to host a dedicated tea auction platform, a move expected to strengthen market access and improve price discovery for local tea growers.
The proposed auction centre aims to provide direct linkage between tea producers and buyers, reducing dependence on distant auction hubs and cutting transportation and intermediary costs. Officials say the initiative will especially benefit small tea growers, who form a substantial part of Tripura’s tea sector and often face challenges in accessing national markets.
Tripura has emerged as an important tea-producing state over the past decade, with its teas gaining recognition for quality and distinct flavour profiles. The new auction facility is expected to enhance transparency in pricing, encourage fair competition, and attract national and international buyers, thereby increasing revenue for producers.
The move is also seen as a step towards diversifying the Northeast’s tea economy, traditionally dominated by Assam. By creating its own auction infrastructure, Tripura aims to position itself more strongly on the tea map of India while generating employment and boosting rural livelihoods.
Officials believe the auction centre will play a crucial role in expanding exports, improving branding of Tripura tea, and supporting long-term growth of the sector, contributing to the overall economic development of the state.
