Two Killed, Several Police Personnel Injured in Violent Clashes in West Karbi Anglong; Internet Suspended
West Karbi Anglong, Assam: Violence erupted in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday after protests over land and eviction-related issues escalated into clashes between demonstrators and security forces. The unrest claimed the lives of two persons and left over 45 people injured, including a large number of police personnel.
According to official sources, the situation spiralled out of control when protesters resorted to stone pelting and arson, prompting police to take crowd-control measures. During the clashes, senior police officials, including the Assam Director General of Police (DGP) and Inspector General of Police (IGP), were among those injured while attempting to manage the situation on the ground.
Several shops and properties were damaged in the violence, and security forces had to use tear gas and other measures to disperse the crowd. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, while additional forces were deployed to prevent further escalation.
In view of the tense situation, the Assam government ordered the suspension of mobile internet and data services in West Karbi Anglong and adjoining areas to curb the spread of rumours and maintain law and order. Prohibitory orders have also been imposed, and authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm.
Senior officials stated that the situation is being closely monitored and efforts are underway to restore normalcy through dialogue and enhanced security presence.
