₹1.46 Crore Hydroponic Cannabis Seized at Guwahati Airport, Customs Foil Smuggling Bid

Guwahati, December 26: Customs officials at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI), Guwahati, have seized a significant quantity of hydroponic cannabis valued at approximately ₹1.46 crore, dealing a major blow to drug smuggling networks attempting to use air routes into the Northeast.

The seizure was made during routine screening of checked-in baggage, when officials noticed suspicious contents during X-ray examination. A detailed inspection led to the recovery of around 1.46 kilograms of dried cannabis, carefully concealed and packed to evade detection. Preliminary testing conducted at the airport confirmed the substance to be cannabis.

Officials said the consignment appeared to be part of a well-planned smuggling attempt, indicating the growing use of domestic air travel for transporting high-value narcotics. Hydroponic cannabis, known for its high potency and market demand, commands a premium price in the illegal drug trade.

A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and further investigation is underway to identify those involved, including possible interstate or organized trafficking links. Customs authorities are examining travel records, baggage handling routes, and other inputs to trace the origin and intended destination of the contraband.

Security agencies stated that surveillance and enforcement measures at Guwahati Airport have been strengthened in recent months, reflecting a focused effort to curb drug trafficking through aviation routes. Officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining strict vigilance and taking decisive action against individuals and networks involved in narcotics smuggling.
