Mangaldai POCSO Case: Accused Sentenced to 20 Years’ Rigorous Imprisonment

In a significant ruling upholding child protection laws, the Additional Sessions Judge-cum-Special Judge (POCSO), Darrang, Dimple Boro, has sentenced 29-year-old Raju Baruah from Barampur village, Mangaldai, to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment for sexual assault of a minor. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a fine of Rs 20,000.

The case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, a special law in India aimed at safeguarding children against sexual abuse and exploitation. The Act prescribes strict punishments, including long-term imprisonment for severe offenses, and treats these cases as non-bailable to ensure the safety and justice for minors.

This verdict is a clear indication of the judiciary’s strict stance against crimes targeting children. It not only delivers justice to the victim but also serves as a strong deterrent against sexual offenses in Assam. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of child protection laws and the need for society to remain vigilant against crimes involving minors.
