Assam Emerges as India’s Fastest-Growing State Economy
The Assam Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday hailed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for steering the state to emerge as the fastest-growing economy in the country, citing the latest data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). As per the RBI’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) figures calculated at constant prices, Assam recorded the highest growth rate among all Indian states over the past five years, significantly outperforming the national average and marking a major economic milestone for the northeastern state.
In an official statement, the BJP said the achievement reflects the success of the state government’s development-focused governance model, highlighting sustained investments in infrastructure, improved ease of doing business, and targeted sectoral reforms. The party noted that key sectors such as agriculture, industry, services, oil and gas, tourism, and connectivity have shown steady expansion, supported by large-scale infrastructure projects, improved road and rail networks, and enhanced industrial and logistics policies.
Crediting the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP said Assam’s economic turnaround is the result of long-term planning, fiscal discipline, and coordinated efforts to attract investment while ensuring welfare-led growth. The party added that flagship initiatives, industrial incentives, and increased capital expenditure have helped strengthen the state’s economic base, while social welfare schemes have aimed to ensure inclusive development.
The BJP further stated that the growth milestone underscores Assam’s rising role in India’s broader economic landscape, particularly as a gateway to the Northeast and Southeast Asia. Reaffirming the government’s commitment to sustained and inclusive growth, the party said the focus going forward will remain on employment generation, youth empowerment, industrial diversification, and positioning Assam among India’s leading states in economic performance.
