Supreme Court Stays New UGC Regulations, Matter Listed for March 19
New Delhi — The Supreme Court of India has put an interim stay on the newly notified regulations issued by the University Grants Commission, halting their implementation until further orders.
The stay applies to the UGC’s Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations, 2026, which were introduced with the stated objective of addressing discrimination in educational institutions. The apex court observed that certain provisions of the regulations raise serious legal and constitutional concerns and require detailed examination.
As part of its interim order, the court directed that the earlier UGC regulations will continue to remain in force for the time being. Notices have also been issued to the Union government and the UGC, seeking their responses to the challenges raised against the new framework.
The matter has been listed for further hearing at a later date. The court’s intervention comes amid wider public discussion and debate surrounding the scope, interpretation, and potential impact of the new regulations on higher education institutions across the country.
