Union Minister Amit Shah Unveils ₹1,700-Crore Projects; Second Assam Assembly to Come Up in Dibrugarh
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday launched development projects worth ₹1,715 crore in Dibrugarh, including the construction of a second complex of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Addressing a public gathering, Shah said the proposed India–European Union Free Trade Agreement would open new export opportunities for Assam’s tea industry in European markets. He also highlighted steps taken by the Centre to address Assam’s flood challenges and called on voters to support the BJP in the upcoming Assembly elections to ensure development, security, industrial growth and long-term flood management.
Targeting previous Congress governments, Shah alleged that Assam had been neglected for decades and accused the party of using infiltration issues for political gains. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Centre has prioritised Assam through major infrastructure and development initiatives. According to him, the state has witnessed a transformation from a history of unrest to an era of peace and progress under BJP rule.
Describing the day as significant for Upper Assam, the Home Minister said the new Legislative Assembly complex in Dibrugarh would strengthen administrative capacity and help develop the city as a second governance hub. He laid the foundation stone for the ₹284-crore Assembly complex and MLA hostel, which will include a three-storey Assembly building, a nine-storey hostel, an 800-seat auditorium and security infrastructure.
Shah also inaugurated the first phase of a ₹238-crore multi-disciplinary sports complex and laid the foundation stone for its second phase, estimated at ₹209 crore. The project will feature indoor and outdoor sports facilities, hostels, spectator galleries and, in its next phase, expanded seating, an athletics track and a central playground.
In addition, the Home Minister laid the foundation stone for a ₹292-crore Wildlife Health and Research Centre, aimed at improving treatment, research and training related to wildlife conservation. He also launched a ₹692-crore wetland restoration project under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund, which seeks to rejuvenate 15 wetlands across nine districts to enhance flood control and water retention in the Brahmaputra basin.
Shah unveiled the projects in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and other dignitaries.
Following the programme, the Home Minister is scheduled to visit Dhemaji to attend a youth festival of the Mising community, interact with party workers, and later hold organisational meetings at the BJP’s Assam headquarters in Guwahati before departing for West Bengal.
