Zubeen Garg Death Case: Bail Plea Order Expected Today
The Kamrup Metropolitan District and Sessions Court is scheduled to pronounce its order on Friday on the bail petitions filed by three accused in connection with the death of acclaimed Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.
The bail applicants include singer Amritprabha Mahanta and Zubeen Garg’s personal security officers Paresh Baishya and Nandeshwar Bora, who are currently in judicial custody. Legal sources said the court is likely to pass its order later in the day after hearing arguments from both sides.
Earlier, during proceedings held on January 22, two other accused — North East India Festival director Shyamkanu Mahanta and the late singer’s cousin Sandipan Garg — withdrew their bail petitions. While Mahanta has been booked on charges of murder, Sandipan Garg, a suspended Assam Police officer, faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Meanwhile, two additional accused in the case — Garg’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma and band member Shekhar Jyoti Goswami — have not sought bail so far.
During the previous hearing, the accused appeared before the court through video conferencing, while Zubeen Garg’s wife Garima and his sister Palmee Borthakur were present in person. Addressing reporters outside the courtroom, Garima stated that the prosecution had firmly opposed the bail pleas and expressed confidence in the arguments put forth.
Zubeen Garg died under mysterious circumstances on September 19 while attending the North East India Festival in Singapore, where he was reported to have drowned while swimming in the sea. The incident sparked widespread public concern and demands for justice in Assam, following which the state government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT). The SIT later filed its chargesheet in the case on December 12.
The court’s decision on Friday is being closely watched and is expected to mark a significant development in the high-profile case.
