Tripartite Agreement Signed for Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority
New Delhi / Nagaland:
The Centre on Wednesday signed a tripartite agreement with the Government of Nagaland and representatives of eastern Naga organisations to establish the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA), marking a significant political and administrative development for the eastern districts of the state.
The agreement aims to provide greater administrative autonomy, focused development, and improved governance for the region, which has long sought a separate administrative arrangement citing economic neglect and lack of infrastructure. Under the pact, the FNTA will have executive, financial, and administrative powers within the framework of the state, while remaining part of Nagaland.
Officials said the proposed authority will facilitate direct funding, local decision-making, and faster implementation of development projects in key sectors such as healthcare, education, roads, and livelihoods. The Centre has also assured continued financial support to strengthen institutions under the new territorial setup.
The agreement was signed in the presence of representatives from the Government of India, the Nagaland government, and eastern Naga bodies after prolonged negotiations.
Leaders involved in the talks described the pact as a balanced solution addressing regional aspirations while preserving the state’s territorial integrity. The implementation framework and operational guidelines of the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority are expected to be rolled out in phases.
The move is being seen as a step towards addressing regional disparities and strengthening peace and governance in Nagaland’s eastern areas.
