Nagaland: Tension In Medziphema After Clash At Maova Village

Nagaland – Tension prevailed in parts of Medziphema Sub-Division in Nagaland on Friday following a violent confrontation at Maova village, prompting authorities to deploy additional security personnel to prevent any further escalation.

According to official sources, the clash is believed to be linked to a long-standing land dispute involving members of the Angami Naga community and residents of the Kuki-inhabited Maova village. Incidents of arson were reported, with preliminary inputs suggesting that several houses were damaged. Some individuals, including an executive magistrate and security personnel, reportedly sustained injuries during stone-pelting, though the exact number of injured and the severity of their condition are yet to be confirmed.

Authorities said the situation has been brought under control, with security forces positioned in sensitive areas. Traffic movement, which was temporarily disrupted, has also been restored. Officials are currently assessing the extent of damage caused and stated that a detailed report will be issued after a comprehensive review.

The Deputy Chief Minister of the state, Yanthungo Patton expressed serious concern over the incident, stating that violence and arson pose grave risks to lives and property. In a message shared on social media, he appealed for calm and restraint, urging all parties to allow lawful processes to address grievances.

The State Police have cautioned residents, particularly in the Betsefema area, against taking the law into their own hands and warned against the spread of rumours, especially on social media platforms.

Meanwhile, the Chakroma Public Organisation has written to the additional deputy commissioner of Medziphema regarding the developments at Maova village.

The police have reiterated their appeal for peace, stating that the situation remains under close watch. Dimapur Police advised the public to cooperate with authorities and refrain from any actions that could aggravate tensions as investigations continue.
