Nagaland Launches First Women-Exclusive BPO Centre in Dimapur
Nagaland took a significant step towards women-led economic development on Wednesday with the launch of its first women-exclusive business process outsourcing (BPO) centre in Dimapur. The initiative signals a growing push towards inclusive growth and technology-driven employment in the state.
Inaugurating the facility, Neiphiu Rio described the centre as a transformative initiative that goes beyond job creation, reflecting the state’s commitment to empowering women and embracing the digital economy. He said the project marks an important chapter in Nagaland’s development journey, where innovation and inclusivity move hand in hand.
The BPO centre has been established through a collaborative effort between the Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) and the JSW Foundation. Notably, it is the first BPO in the Northeast designed exclusively for women.
In its initial phase, the centre will provide structured employment to around 125 women aged 18 and above, offering opportunities in IT-enabled services. Plans are already in place to expand operations substantially, with the workforce expected to grow in the coming months.
Speaking at the event, Rio highlighted Nagaland’s strong human resource potential, noting that the state’s youth are educated, adaptable and proficient in English—qualities that position them well for participation in the global service sector. He reiterated that skill development, entrepreneurship and private sector partnerships remain central to the government’s long-term development strategy.
Emphasising the role of women in Naga society, the chief minister said initiatives like this BPO centre would strengthen financial independence, support professional advancement and help curb migration by enabling young women to build careers within the state.
IDAN Chairman and Adviser to the Chief Minister, Abu Metha, termed the project a landmark achievement. He said nearly ₹6 crore has been invested in the first phase by JSW Foundation and JSW Shakti, adding that the facility was conceptualised and completed within a short span of six months. According to him, the next phase aims to scale the workforce to nearly 500 employees.
Chief Operating Officer of JSW Shakti Foundation Rahul Dev said the centre is designed to promote sustainable employment for women while contributing to the growth of the region’s digital and service economy. He pointed out that while similar models exist elsewhere in India, this is the first such women-centric BPO in the Northeast.
The inauguration ceremony concluded with the distribution of engagement letters to selected candidates, officially marking the beginning of operations at the centre and reinforcing Nagaland’s move towards inclusive, women-driven economic participation.
