Nagaland: Dzukou Valley Reopens for Trekkers After Wildfire

Kohima, Nagaland | February 20, 2026: After weeks of uncertainty, Nagaland’s iconic Dzukou Valley has officially reopened for trekking. The reopening was announced by the Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) following a thorough safety assessment, allowing trekkers to return to the valley after a wildfire impacted the area for nearly 25 days.
According to SAYO, the decision comes after detailed ground inspections carried out by its volunteers in coordination with concerned authorities, supported by aerial assessments through helicopter services. These evaluations confirmed that the fire has been fully contained and that the valley is now safe for visitors, with precautionary measures firmly in place.
While expressing concern over the damage caused to natural flora, fauna, and wildlife habitats, the organisation struck a hopeful note, stating that Dzukou’s ecosystem is resilient. Seasonal wildflowers are expected to regenerate in the coming months, gradually restoring the valley’s famed landscape.
SAYO has reiterated that hiring a local tourist guide remains mandatory for all trekkers, in line with guidelines implemented on October 1, 2025. Trekkers who fail to comply with this rule will not be permitted entry into the valley.
The organisation also reminded visitors that trekking after 3:00 PM during winter (October–March) and 4:00 PM during summer (April–September) continues to be strictly prohibited.
Extending gratitude, SAYO acknowledged the efforts of various agencies, volunteers, and well-wishers whose timely support played a crucial role in containing the wildfire and ensuring the safe reopening of Dzukou Valley.
