Ricky AJ Syngkon, Shillong MP, Dies After Sudden Collapse During Football Game

Shillong Member of Parliament Ricky AJ Syngkon passed away on Thursday evening after collapsing during a football match in Mawlai Mawiong, sending shockwaves across Meghalaya.
According to reports, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) leader had gone to a local playground to play football with friends when he suddenly fell ill on the field. He was immediately rushed to the Mawiong Community Health Centre. As per available information, he was later referred to a higher medical facility and admitted to Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital for advanced treatment.
Hospital sources confirmed that despite medical efforts, he was declared dead at approximately 8:42 PM.
Political Leaders Express Grief
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed deep sorrow over the sudden demise. In a statement shared on social media, he described Syngkon as a dedicated public servant committed to the welfare of the people and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
Several senior leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, along with legislators and party workers, reached the hospital to pay their respects.

A first-time MP, Syngkon rose to prominence after winning the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Shillong on a VPP ticket. His victory marked a significant political shift in the state. Known for his strong grassroots engagement and advocacy on issues concerning tribal rights and governance, his sudden passing has left a void in Meghalaya’s political landscape.
Leaders across party lines paid tribute to him, remembering him as a committed representative dedicated to public service.
