Guwahati Airport’s New Terminal Operational, Annual Capacity Rises to 13.1 Million

Guwahati | February 23, 2026

In a major boost to aviation infrastructure in the Northeast, the newly expanded terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport has commenced full commercial operations. The expansion has increased the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to 13.1 million, significantly enhancing connectivity for Guwahati and the wider Northeast region.

The new terminal, inaugurated in December 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, officially began handling flights from February 22, 2026, following operational trials and system integration checks.

A Strategic Aviation Milestone

The expansion marks one of the largest aviation infrastructure upgrades in the Northeast. With rising passenger traffic over the past few years, the earlier facilities were operating near capacity. The newly operational terminal is designed to accommodate future growth in both domestic and international travel.

Officials say the upgraded infrastructure will:

  • Strengthen Guwahati’s position as the primary air gateway to the Northeast
  • Improve regional connectivity with metro cities and international destinations
  • Support tourism, trade, and business travel
  • Enhance passenger comfort with modern amenities and streamlined services

Modern Infrastructure and Passenger Experience

The terminal features expanded check-in counters, advanced baggage handling systems, enhanced security screening zones, spacious waiting lounges, and improved retail and dining areas. The design also incorporates sustainable and energy-efficient elements aligned with modern airport standards.

Aviation authorities have stated that the expansion is expected to reduce congestion, improve turnaround time for aircraft, and provide a smoother travel experience during peak hours.

Boost for Assam’s Economy

The upgraded airport infrastructure is expected to positively impact Assam’s tourism sector, especially with increasing interest in eco-tourism, cultural tourism, and business travel in the region. Industry experts believe improved air connectivity will also encourage greater investment and economic activity across the Northeast corridor.

With the new terminal now operational, Guwahati is poised to strengthen its role as a key aviation and economic hub in eastern India.
