Nagaland Agriculture Advisor Mhathung Yanthan attends Chitso Sumai Festival

Pathso Noknyu, February 26: The Khiamniungan community of Pathso Noknyu marked Chitso Sumai, their traditional agricultural festival, at Khaushiu Public Ground on February 24, signalling the beginning of a new farming season rooted in thanksgiving and hope. MLA and advisor for agriculture Mhathung Yanthan attended the programme as special guest, while MLA Benei M Lamthiu served as the host.

Speaking at the event, Yanthan described the festival as a reminder of the close link between faith, land and livelihood. He said it offers an opportunity to thank God for past abundance while seeking strength and guidance for the labour ahead. Emphasising the state government’s focus on farmers’ welfare, he encouraged both cultivators and young people to look beyond subsistence farming and explore agriculture as a viable and sustainable economic activity.

Host MLA Lamthiu highlighted the natural advantages of the region, noting that the Khiamniungan people are supported by fertile soil and a strong work ethic. However, he cautioned that changing climatic conditions have reduced the effectiveness of many traditional practices. He stressed the urgency of adopting modern and sustainable farming methods to address these emerging challenges.

Calling for institutional support, Lamthiu urged concerned departments to work closely with farmers by providing training, technical inputs and timely resources to help them adapt to improved agricultural practices.

The programme concluded with the inauguration of exhibition stalls by Yanthan, showcasing initiatives by various village organisations. Cultural performances by the Pathso Nokeng cultural troupe and the Pathso cultural troupe followed, bringing the celebration to a vibrant close.
