Zubeen Garg Death Case: Trial Begins as Sessions Court Holds First Hearing

The trial in the high-profile Zubeen Garg death case formally commenced on Monday as a Sessions Court in Guwahati held its first hearing, marking a crucial step in the judicial process surrounding the demise of the legendary Assamese singer.
During the hearing, the court took cognisance of the chargesheet filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police and completed initial procedural formalities. With this, the case has officially moved from the investigation phase to the trial stage.
The accused appeared before the court through their legal representatives, and the court outlined the framework for upcoming proceedings, including examination of evidence and witness testimonies. The matter has now been scheduled for subsequent hearings, during which charges are expected to be framed.
Legal sources indicated that bail pleas by some of the accused may be taken up in future hearings, subject to the court’s consideration. The prosecution is expected to rely on documentary, forensic, and circumstantial evidence compiled during the SIT investigation, while the defence will present its arguments as the trial progresses.
Zubeen Garg’s death in September 2025 in Singapore had initially been reported as an accidental incident. However, the circumstances surrounding his demise triggered widespread public concern, emotional reactions across Assam and the Northeast, and demands for a transparent probe. Multiple complaints and FIRs eventually led to the formation of a Special Investigation Team by the Assam government.
The SIT later submitted a chargesheet naming several individuals, paving the way for the commencement of trial proceedings in a sessions court. The case has remained under intense public and media scrutiny due to Zubeen Garg’s towering cultural legacy and his deep emotional connection with the people of Assam.
While Singapore authorities have earlier stated that no foul play was detected in their investigation, the Indian judicial process will now independently examine the evidence presented before the court.
The commencement of the trial is being seen as a significant moment for supporters, family members, and the wider public who have been seeking clarity, accountability, and closure in the case.
The court is expected to continue hearing the matter in the coming weeks.
