Assam Exports GI-Tagged Karbi Anglong Ginger to London
Guwahati | March 2, 2026
Assam marked a significant milestone in its agricultural export sector as Agriculture Minister Atul Bora inaugurated the maiden overseas shipment of Geographical Indication (GI)-certified ginger cultivated in Karbi Anglong, with the consignment destined for London in the United Kingdom. The ceremonial flag-off took place at Krishi Bhawan in Khanapara, Guwahati, in the presence of senior agriculture department officials and sector stakeholders.
Describing the development as a proud and historic step for the state’s farmers, Bora said the aromatic ginger grown in the hills of Karbi Anglong is known for its superior fibre content, strong pungency and distinct flavour profile. He noted that the first export to an international market reflects growing global recognition of Assam’s agricultural quality and potential.
The export comprises a 1.2-metric-tonne trial consignment. Officials stated that the shipment follows structured efforts to connect local producers with overseas buyers through international trade interactions held earlier this year. Importers reportedly expressed strong interest after evaluating the product’s quality and its certified origin credentials.
Authorities said the consignment has been dispatched on a trial basis, and if the response from the London market is favourable, larger and more frequent shipments could follow. The ginger carries a GI tag, which legally recognises its unique geographical origin and safeguards its authenticity while enhancing brand value in global markets.
Agriculture department officials believe the development will provide improved market access and better price realisation for farmers in Karbi Anglong by expanding opportunities beyond domestic markets. Industry observers noted that the successful export could pave the way for more value-added agricultural products from Assam to enter international supply chains, strengthening the state’s agri-export footprint.
In a related development, Assam Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Kokrajhar on March 13, where he is expected to lay foundation stones for key development projects. Detailed information regarding the projects is awaited, but officials indicated that multiple initiatives aligned with earlier agreements may be launched during the visit, which comes ahead of the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections.
