Manipur on Edge After Attack: Protests, Curfew, and CM’s Urgent Appeal for Calm
Imphal, April 10:
Manipur has once again been pushed into a state of heightened tension following a fresh outbreak of violence triggered by a deadly attack in Bishnupur district. The incident has reignited fears across the state, prompting urgent security measures and a high-level review by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, who has appealed to the public to maintain calm and uphold peace.
Deadly Attack Sparks Widespread Outrage
The latest unrest was triggered by a suspected rocket or improvised explosive attack in a residential locality of Bishnupur district. The attack claimed the lives of two children and left their mother critically injured, sending shockwaves across the region.
The nature of the attack, targeting civilians in a residential zone, has been widely condemned. Authorities believe the incident was a deliberate attempt to destabilise the already fragile peace in the state. The brutality of the act has intensified public anger and renewed concerns about civilian safety.
Security agencies immediately moved to secure the area, while emergency services rushed the injured to nearby medical facilities. Officials have assured that all necessary medical support is being provided to the victims.
Protests Erupt, Situation Escalates Across Valley Districts
In the aftermath of the attack, widespread protests broke out across several valley districts, including Imphal East, Imphal West, and surrounding regions. What began as public demonstrations demanding justice soon escalated into violent confrontations.
Angry groups reportedly attempted to storm security installations, leading to clashes with deployed forces. In response, security personnel resorted to tear gas and controlled firing to disperse the crowds and prevent further escalation.
The clashes resulted in additional casualties, while several vehicles were torched and public infrastructure was damaged. The intensity of the protests highlighted the deep-seated anger among residents, particularly over the targeting of civilians.
Curfew Imposed, Internet Services Suspended
With the situation deteriorating rapidly, the state administration imposed an indefinite curfew across multiple sensitive districts, including Bishnupur, Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching.
To curb the spread of misinformation and prevent mobilisation through social media platforms, mobile internet services were also temporarily suspended. Authorities emphasised that the restrictions were necessary to maintain law and order and prevent further escalation.
A heavy deployment of central and state security forces has been carried out in vulnerable areas, with checkpoints, patrols, and surveillance intensified to ensure stability.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the attack has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency, indicating the seriousness of the case and the need for a comprehensive and impartial probe.
Chief Minister Reviews Security Situation, Calls for Peace
Amid the crisis, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh convened a high-level security review meeting with senior officials, law enforcement agencies, and key stakeholders.
Strongly condemning the attack, the Chief Minister described it as an “inhuman act” and assured that those responsible would be identified and brought to justice. He directed authorities to intensify security arrangements, especially in vulnerable and conflict-prone areas.
The Chief Minister also instructed officials to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured and extend necessary support to affected families.
In a public appeal, he urged citizens to remain calm, refrain from spreading rumours, and cooperate with authorities in restoring normalcy. He emphasised the importance of unity and communal harmony during such sensitive times.
Situation Tense but Under Control
According to officials, the situation is currently “tense but under control,” with no major fresh incidents reported after the initial wave of violence. However, security forces remain on high alert, and restrictions are being strictly enforced.
Sporadic protests and expressions of public anger continue in some areas, reflecting the emotional impact of the recent attack. Authorities are closely monitoring developments and maintaining a strong presence to prevent any further escalation.
Background: Prolonged Ethnic Conflict
The recent developments are part of a larger and ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur between the Meitei community in the valley and the Kuki-Zo tribal groups in the hill regions. The conflict, which began in May 2023, has led to significant loss of life and large-scale displacement.
Thousands of people continue to live in relief camps, while issues related to land rights, identity, and political representation remain unresolved. The persistent tensions have created a volatile environment where isolated incidents can quickly escalate into widespread unrest.
Conclusion: Fragile Peace Faces Renewed Challenge
The latest violence underscores the fragile security landscape in Manipur, where peace remains uncertain despite ongoing efforts by the government and security agencies.
While immediate measures have helped bring the situation under control, the incident highlights the urgent need for long-term solutions, dialogue, and trust-building among communities.
As the state navigates yet another phase of unrest, the focus remains on restoring stability, ensuring justice for victims, and preventing further loss of life.
