‘The Ancestral Voice’ Yimkhiung folktales book launched in Nagaland

Kohima, March 5: “The Ancestral Voice: Yimkhiung Naga Tales and Stories” by Runshito Lim was launched on Wednesday at Dr. Setu Memorial Hall at Alder College in Kohima.

The book, which marks the 116th publication of PenThrill Publication House, focuses on preserving and retelling traditional folktales from the Yimkhiung Naga community.

Special guest Obed Quinker, chairman of the Nagaland Bee-Keeping & Honey Mission, spoke about the contrast between past and present education systems. He noted that students earlier studied with limited facilities, while present-day learners have access to better opportunities. He also encouraged aspiring writers to keep stories alive through retelling and reinterpretation, saying that effective communication is a writer’s greatest strength.

In her publisher’s note, Vishü Rita Krocha described the book as the first release of 2026 by PenThrill and said it marks an encouraging start for the year. She highlighted the publication as an important contribution from the Yimkhiung community and possibly within the wider literary landscape of Nagaland. Krocha also acknowledged the presence of the Yimkhiung Literature Board and the Yimkhiung Tribal Council, stating that literature plays a vital role in shaping society and preserving shared heritage.

Author Runshito Lim shared that his interest in storytelling began during childhood while living with his maternal grandparents. Listening to his grandfather narrate folktales from Huker and Chessore inspired him to document and preserve the stories for future generations.

At the launch event, R. Tohanba, chairman of the Yimkhiung Literature Board and former parliamentary secretary, and Laji Luyanba, general secretary of the Yimkhiung Tribal Council, also addressed the gathering.

The programme began with an invocation by Rachel, women director of Yimkhiung Baptist Borü Kohima. A review of the book was presented by Dr. Theyiesinuo Keditsu, while the benediction was delivered by Lily, CED of the same organisation.
