Rajdhani Express to Halt at Diphu: New Stop Introduced on Dibrugarh–New Delhi Route
Guwahati | March 2026 Passengers travelling between Upper Assam and the national capital will soon have an additional boarding point, as Indian Railways has approved a new stoppage for the Dibrugarh–New Delhi Rajdhani Express at Diphu Railway Station in Karbi Anglong district. The decision has been implemented by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to improve long-distance connectivity for residents of hill districts in Assam. Diphu, which serves as the headquarters of Karbi Anglong, has long witnessed demand from passengers seeking easier access to premium trains connecting the Northeast with major metropolitan cities. New Halt Details The Rajdhani Express running between Dibrugarh and New Delhi will now halt at Diphu Railway Station (DPU) during both its up and down journeys. The halt is expected to benefit passengers from Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, and nearby regions, who previously had to travel to larger stations such as Dimapur, Lumding, or Guwahati to board the train. Significance of the Decision Railway officials say the stoppage is part of broader efforts to strengthen railway accessibility in underserved regions. Rajdhani Express trains are among the fastest long-distance trains in the country and offer premium facilities including air-conditioned coaches and onboard catering. With the new halt, travellers from Diphu and surrounding areas will gain direct access to a high-speed connection to New Delhi, reducing travel time and improving convenience for students, government officials, business travellers, and patients seeking treatment in larger cities. Regional Impact Local leaders and residents have welcomed the move, stating that improved railway connectivity will support economic activities, tourism, and mobility in Karbi Anglong. Diphu has been witnessing growing passenger demand in recent years due to its administrative importance and its role as a key transit point in central Assam. Part of Wider Railway Expansion The introduction of this stoppage aligns with Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to expand rail services and improve connectivity in the Northeast region, which has seen several infrastructure upgrades and operational changes in recent years. Railway authorities have indicated that such halts are often introduced on a trial or experimental basis, and their continuation may depend on passenger demand and operational feasibility.
