Guwahati | March 10, 2026
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday inaugurated the state’s first Science City at Sonapur, near Guwahati, marking a significant step toward strengthening science education and innovation in Assam.
Developed over a large area on the outskirts of the city, the Science City has been designed to promote scientific awareness and provide an interactive learning experience for students, researchers and visitors. The facility aims to make science more engaging through hands-on exhibits and modern learning spaces.
The newly inaugurated centre includes themed science galleries, exhibition halls and dedicated zones that highlight different areas of science and technology. These installations are intended to spark curiosity among young learners and encourage greater interest in scientific exploration.
The project has been developed in collaboration with the National Council of Science Museums under the Union Ministry of Culture and the Assam government. Officials said the initiative will serve as an important hub for science education and outreach activities in the region.
During the event, the Chief Minister also virtually inaugurated several district science centres across Assam to further expand access to science learning facilities in different parts of the state.
The Science City is expected to become a major educational attraction in the Northeast, providing students and visitors with opportunities to explore science through interactive displays, demonstrations and educational programmes.
