Assam Elections 2026: Over 2,000 buses mobilised from other states for poll duty
Guwahati | April 2026
In a significant logistical exercise ahead of the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election, authorities have mobilised over 2,000 buses from neighbouring states to facilitate poll-related operations across Assam.
Officials stated that the large-scale deployment is aimed at ensuring the smooth movement of security personnel, polling officials, and election materials, including Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), across the state’s 126 constituencies.
Given Assam’s complex terrain—ranging from remote hill districts to riverine areas along the Brahmaputra River—transportation remains a critical component of election preparedness. Several polling stations are located in difficult-to-access regions, making additional transport arrangements necessary to ensure timely deployment.
The requisitioned buses are being used in a phased manner for pre-poll deployment, poll-day movement, and post-poll retrieval operations, particularly for the secure transportation of personnel and voting equipment. Authorities are coordinating closely with transport departments and security agencies to streamline routes and maintain strict schedules.
The move also comes amid heightened security arrangements, with a large number of central forces being deployed across sensitive and vulnerable polling stations to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process.
With final preparations underway, election officials have intensified logistical planning to minimise disruptions and ensure that all polling teams reach their designated locations well ahead of voting.
