Konyak Union Meets Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma at Police Headquarters

Kohima, April 8: Konyak Union, in a meeting with Nagaland Director General of Police Rupin Sharma on Tuesday, highlighted the growing drug menace and prevailing law and order concerns in Mon district, urging immediate intervention.

During the interaction at the Police Headquarters in Kohima, the Union called for the establishment of a robust, coordinated, and result-oriented mechanism to effectively control the spread and abuse of narcotic substances. It warned that the increasing drug problem poses a serious threat to the safety, well-being, and future of the youth in the district.

To address the issue, the Union pressed for proactive policing measures, including the installation of check gates at key border locations such as Longwa towards Pongchao in Arunachal Pradesh, Kangnyu village, the Chen area, and Monyakshu in the Tobu region. It stated that these steps would help regulate movement, curb cross-border trafficking, and dismantle drug networks.

The Union also appreciated the state government and police department for conducting fair and transparent recruitment for Nagaland Police (GD) through a merit-based examination system, terming it a positive move toward equal opportunity.

However, it raised concerns about candidates with educational qualifications below Class 10, noting that they often face disadvantages in written examinations. The Union urged authorities to introduce a more inclusive mechanism to ensure equitable opportunities for individuals from diverse educational backgrounds and marginalised sections.

Additionally, the Union suggested reserving a percentage of vacancies for sportspersons in police recruitment, in line with practices in other states, to encourage youth participation in sports.

It further reiterated its earlier appeal to the Deputy Chief Minister (Home) dated July 12, 2025, seeking enhancement of infrastructure and manpower under the District Executive Force (DEF) in Mon district. The Union stressed the urgent need for a fully functional police station at Tiru, pointing out the lack of adequate infrastructure in the existing setup.

Reaffirming its support for initiatives that promote fairness, inclusivity, and youth empowerment, the Konyak Union expressed hope that its concerns and recommendations would be given due consideration by the authorities.
